Formula & How Resistor Color Code Calculator Works

Mathematical Formula
R = (Band1 × 10 + Band2) × 10^Multiplier

A resistor's value is shown by coloured bands. The first two bands give digits, the third is the multiplier and the fourth is the tolerance. Brown (1), black (0), red (×100) and gold (±5%) read as 10 × 100 = 1,000 Ω, or 1 kΩ ±5%. The digit colours run black 0, brown 1, red 2, orange 3, yellow 4, green 5, blue 6, violet 7, grey 8 and white 9. A gold tolerance band is ±5% and silver is ±10%. Read from the end that is nearest the bands, with the tolerance band on the right. Use a multimeter to confirm the value if you are unsure, because bands can be hard to tell apart.

How to Calculate Resistor Color Code Calculator (Step-by-Step)
  1. Enter Band 1 (1st Digit): Input your target parameter value.
  2. Enter Band 2 (2nd Digit): Input your target parameter value.
  3. Enter Band 3 (Multiplier): Input your target parameter value.
  4. Enter Band 4 (Tolerance): Input your target parameter value.
  5. Apply Formula: Calculate using R = (Band1 × 10 + Band2) × 10^Multiplier.
  6. Review Results: View exact computed answers, metrics, and worked mathematical proofs.
