Formula & How Topographic Map Scale Calculator Works
A map scale of 1:25,000 means 1 unit on the map is 25,000 of the same unit on the ground. So 1 cm on the map is 25,000 cm, or 250 m, on the ground, and 4 cm is exactly 1 km. On a 1:50,000 map, 3 cm represents 1.5 km. To find a ground distance, multiply the measured map distance by the scale number and convert units. To work out the map distance for a route, divide the ground distance by the scale. Larger scale maps, such as 1:25,000, show more detail than smaller scale maps, such as 1:250,000. Measured distances are straight-line, so allow extra for winding paths and terrain.
