Formula & How Exponent & Power Calculator Works
An exponent says how many times to multiply a number by itself: 2^10 means ten twos multiplied together, which is 1,024. A negative exponent gives the reciprocal, so 2^-3 = 1/2^3 = 1/8 = 0.125. A fractional exponent is a root: 81^(1/2) is the square root of 81, which is 9, and 27^(1/3) is the cube root of 27, which is 3. Powers of ten move the decimal point, so 10^3 = 1,000 and 10^-2 = 0.01. Enter the base and exponent to see the result, the worked steps and the reverse root or logarithm so you can check the answer.
