Formula & How Velocity, Distance & Time Calculator Works

Mathematical Formula
v = d / t

Average velocity is the distance travelled divided by the time taken: v = d ÷ t. A sprinter who covers 100 m in 12 s averages 100 ÷ 12 = 8.33 m/s, which is 8.33 × 3.6 = 30 km/h. Rearranged, distance = speed × time and time = distance ÷ speed, so a car at 90 km/h takes 40 minutes to travel 60 km. Velocity also has a direction, so two objects with the same speed can have different velocities. Make sure your distance and time units agree (metres with seconds, or kilometres with hours) and convert at the end, because mixing them is the most common error.
