Formula & How Percentage Change Calculator Works
Percentage change measures how far a value has moved relative to where it started: (new value − old value) ÷ old value × 100. A salary rising from $80,000 to $88,000 is a change of 8,000 ÷ 80,000 = 0.10, or a 10% increase. A price falling from $200 to $150 is −50 ÷ 200 = −0.25, a 25% decrease. Note that the reverse move is not the same percentage: a 25% fall followed by a 25% rise leaves you below where you started, because the rise applies to a smaller number. A positive result means an increase and a negative result means a decrease.
