Formula & How Kinetic & Potential Energy Calculator Works

Mathematical Formula
Ek = ½mv², Ep = mgh

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion: Ek = ½ × m × v². A 1,000 kg car at 20 m/s (72 km/h) has ½ × 1,000 × 400 = 200,000 J, or 200 kJ. At 40 m/s the energy is 800 kJ, four times as much, because speed is squared. That is why stopping distances and crash forces rise so steeply with speed. Potential energy is Ep = m × g × h, so an 80 kg person on a platform 10 m up has 80 × 9.81 × 10 = 7,848 J of potential energy relative to the ground. Energy is conserved, so potential energy converts to kinetic energy as an object falls.
