Formula & How HECS / HELP Debt Repayment Calculator Works

Mathematical Formula
Repayment = 15% × (income − $69,528) up to $129,717; then $9,028.35 + 17% × (income − $129,717) up to $186,050; above that 10% × income

HELP repayments are now calculated on a marginal basis, so only the part of your repayment income above each threshold is charged at that rate. For the 2026 to 2027 income year there is no compulsory repayment up to $69,528. Between $69,529 and $129,717 you repay 15 cents for every dollar over $69,528. Between $129,718 and $186,050 you repay $9,028.35 plus 17 cents for every dollar over $129,717. Above $186,050 the repayment is 10% of your whole repayment income. For example, at $85,000 you repay (85,000 − 69,528) × 0.15 = about $2,321 for the year. Repayment income is taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits, total net investment losses (including rental losses), reportable super contributions and exempt foreign employment income, so use your repayment income, not just your salary. Confirm the thresholds on the ATO site each 1 July.
