Formula & How Fraction Calculator Works
Fractions are added or subtracted by first giving both fractions a common denominator, then combining the numerators. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 becomes 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. To multiply, multiply numerators together and denominators together: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2. To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2. Every result is reduced to lowest terms by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, and improper fractions are also shown as mixed numbers and decimals so you can check your working.
