Formula & How Ocean Current Force & Mooring Drag Calculator Works
Drag force scales with the square of velocity, so doubling current speed quadruples the load — the single most important fact in mooring design. Seawater is roughly 840 times denser than air, which is why a 2 knot current can exert more force on a hull than a 25 knot wind despite the much lower speed. Mooring lines rarely lead horizontally, so the tension exceeds the horizontal load by the cosine of the lead angle, and a safety factor is applied on top to set the minimum breaking load.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Does current or wind put more load on a moored boat?
Usually current. Seawater is about 840 times denser than air, so even a 2 knot current often exceeds the load from a 25 knot wind on a comparable area.
What safety factor should mooring lines use?
A 3:1 factor on peak calculated load is a common working minimum. Permanent moorings and commercial installations typically use 5:1 on the line's minimum breaking load.
