Formula & How Temperature Converter Works

Mathematical Formula
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32, K = °C + 273.15

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit multiply by 9/5 and add 32: 25°C × 1.8 + 32 = 77°F. To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9: (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 37°C, normal body temperature. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15, so 0°C is 273.15 K and absolute zero is −273.15°C. Water freezes at 0°C (32°F) and boils at 100°C (212°F) at sea level. The two scales agree at −40, where −40°C equals −40°F. Pilots and engineers also use Kelvin for calculations involving gases, because the formulas need an absolute temperature scale.
