Summary: At 1100 kg, 2000 ft pressure altitude, and 25°C with a 10 kt wind component, the estimated ground roll is 315 m (1035 ft) and total distance over a 50 ft obstacle is 535 m (1757 ft). CASA recommends planning for at least 669 m.
Step-by-Step Calculation Solution
1.ISA Temperature at PA = 15°C - (1.98 × (2000 / 1000)) = 11°C (ΔISA = 14°C)
2.Weight Factor = (1100 / 1157)² = 0.904
3.Altitude & Temp Factor = 1 + (2000/1000 × 0.10) + (13.96 × 0.01) = 1.34
4.Wind Correction Factor = 0.89 (10 kts)
5.Total Ground Roll = 960 ft × 0.904 × 1.34 × 0.89 × 1 = 1035 ft (315 m)
6.CASA Factored Takeoff Distance Required (TODR) = 535 m × 1.25 = 669 m

Formula & How Aircraft Takeoff Distance & Obstacle Clearance Calculator Works

Mathematical Formula
TODR = BaseRoll × (Weight/MTOW)² × [1 + 0.1(PA/1000) + 0.01ΔISA] × WindFactor × SurfaceFactor × 1.25 CASA Margin

Takeoff distance is the base ground roll scaled for weight, density altitude, wind and the surface, then increased by a safety margin. With a 960 ft sea-level base roll, a weight of 1,100 kg against a 1,157 kg maximum gives a factor of (1,100 ÷ 1,157)² = 0.90. At 2,000 ft pressure altitude and 25°C, which is ISA +14, the altitude and temperature factor is 1 + 0.1 × 2 + 0.01 × 14 = 1.34. The still-air ground roll is then 960 × 0.90 × 1.34 = about 1,163 ft, and with the 1.25 margin about 1,453 ft. Headwind shortens the roll, while tailwind, a soft or wet surface and a slope lengthen it. Always use the aircraft's flight manual for real operations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does density altitude affect takeoff distance?

High density altitude reduces engine power output, lowers propeller efficiency, and increases the true airspeed needed for liftoff, dramatically lengthening the takeoff ground roll.

What is the CASA takeoff distance safety factor?

Under Australian CASR Part 91 MOS / AC 91-15 guidelines, a 1.15 safety factor is applied to ground roll and 1.25 (or 1.33 for private operations) is applied to total distance over a 50 ft obstacle.

How much does a grass runway increase takeoff distance?

Dry short grass typically increases takeoff ground roll by 15% to 20%, while wet long grass or soft soil can increase ground roll by 25% to 40%.

Aviation Safety: Pre-Flight Planning & Weather Decision-Making
Build a pre-flight weather workflow that keeps VFR flights out of cloud: reading the Graphical Area Forecast (GAF), knowing when the rules require an alternate aerodrome, and setting a turn-back point before the weather sets it for you.

Operational Scenario

Operational Scenario: Coastal VFR Passage Approaching Deteriorating Stratus
You are planning a day VFR flight from Moorabbin (YMMB) to Latrobe Valley (YLTV) via the coastal visual corridor. The GAF indicates broken stratocumulus at 2,500 ft with localised coastal drizzle lowering the cloud base to 1,000 ft AMSL. The forecast freezing level is 4,500 ft with moderate mountain waves over the Strzelecki Ranges.

Practical Decisions

  • •Compare the GAF area by area against your personal minimums, and decide before departure the cloud base at which you will turn back.
  • •Check whether an alternate is required (CASR Part 91 MOS 8.04; AIP ENR 1.1 para 10.7.2): for an aeroplane, if you will arrive during, or up to 30 minutes before, forecast cloud of more than SCT below 1,500 ft or visibility below 8 km at the destination, you must provide for a suitable alternate — unless flying day VFR within 50 NM of the departure point.
  • •Know what CAVOK means (AIP GEN 3.5): visibility 10 km or more, no cloud below 5,000 ft or the highest minimum sector altitude (whichever is higher), no cumulonimbus or towering cumulus, and no significant weather.
  • •Set a fixed turn-back point before terrain traps or coastal cloud banks, and brief it as a decision already made.
