Summary: By salary sacrificing $10,000/yr you save $1,750 in tax. Your take-home only reduces by $6,800 — the rest stays in your super.
Step-by-Step Calculation Solution
1.SG Contribution (12%) = $110,000 × 12% = $13,200
2.Total Concessional = SG $13,200 + Salary Sacrifice $10,000 = $23,200
3.Tax saving per $1 sacrificed = Marginal rate 32.5% - Super tax 15% = 17.5¢
4.Annual tax saving = $10,000 × 17.5% = $1,750
5.Actual take-home reduction = $6,800 (less than the sacrifice due to tax benefit)

Formula & How Superannuation Concessional Cap & Salary Sacrifice Calculator Works

Mathematical Formula
Cap Used = SG + Salary Sacrifice | Tax Saved = Sacrifice × (Marginal Rate - 15%)

Concessional contributions — employer Super Guarantee, salary sacrifice and personal deductible contributions — are capped at $32,500 per year and taxed at 15% inside the fund. Sacrificing salary converts income taxed at your marginal rate into contributions taxed at 15%, so the benefit is the gap between the two. Exceeding the cap means the excess is taxed at your marginal rate with an interest charge. Worked example: on a $110,000 salary the employer's 12% super guarantee is $13,200. Adding $10,000 of salary sacrifice brings concessional contributions to $23,200, which leaves $9,300 of headroom under the $32,500 cap. At a 32% marginal rate (30% plus the 2% Medicare levy) the sacrificed $10,000 is taxed at 15% inside the fund instead, saving about $1,700. Unused cap amounts can sometimes be carried forward if your balance is under $500,000.
