Formula & How Present / Future Value (PV/FV) Calculator Works
Money today is worth more than the same amount in the future because it can earn a return. Future value is FV = PV × (1 + r)^n and present value is PV = FV ÷ (1 + r)^n. $10,000 invested at 6% a year for 10 years grows to 10,000 × 1.06^10 = $17,908. Working the other way, $20,000 to be received in 5 years is worth 20,000 ÷ 1.05^5 = $15,671 today at a 5% discount rate. Present value is used to compare investments, value a stream of payments, and decide whether a lump sum now or payments later is better. The result is very sensitive to the rate you choose.
