Formula & How Helicopter IGE & OGE Hover Ceiling Performance Calculator Works
Hover ceiling is the highest altitude at which a helicopter can hover, in ground effect (IGE) or out of ground effect (OGE), at a given weight. It depends on density altitude, which is pressure altitude corrected for temperature: DA = PA + 120 × (OAT − ISA). At 3,000 ft pressure altitude the ISA temperature is 9°C, so with an OAT of 25°C the ISA deviation is +16 and the density altitude is 3,000 + 120 × 16 = 4,920 ft. Compare this with the helicopter's hover ceiling chart for your weight to find the margin. Hot, high and heavy conditions reduce the margin quickly, and OGE hover needs much more power than IGE. Always use the aircraft's flight manual data.
- Enter Helicopter Model Preset: Input your target parameter value.
- Enter Aircraft Gross Weight (kg) (kg): Input your target parameter value.
- Enter Takeoff / Landing Pressure Altitude (ft) (ft PA): Input your target parameter value.
- Enter Outside Air Temperature OAT (°C) (°C): Input your target parameter value.
- Apply Formula: Calculate using
DA = PA + 120 × (OAT - ISA) | Max IGE/OGE = Base Ceiling + Weight Correction | Margin = Max Ceiling - DA. - Review Results: View exact computed answers, metrics, and worked mathematical proofs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the difference between IGE and OGE hover?
IGE (In-Ground-Effect) hover benefits from ground cushion aerodynamics that reduce induced drag, allowing the helicopter to hover at higher altitudes and heavier weights than in OGE (Out-of-Ground-Effect) free air hover.

Operational Scenario
Operational Scenario: A Near Miss in the Circuit That "Everyone Saw Coming"
Two aircraft converge on final at a non-controlled aerodrome; both go around, with no damage and no injuries. In the clubhouse afterwards, several members describe the same blind spot and inconsistent radio calls causing earlier close calls. Nothing was ever written down.
Practical Decisions
- •Report it: the unexpected close proximity of aircraft in flight (an airprox, or near miss) is listed as a routine reportable matter — submit a written report to the ATSB within 72 hours (Transport Safety Investigation Act 2003; AIP ENR 1.14). Immediately reportable matters must be phoned through as soon as practicable, then followed by a written report.
- •Separate "what happened and why" (for learning) from "was anyone culpable" (rare, and a different process). A just culture protects honest reporting and reserves sanction for recklessness or wilful violation.
- •Fix the system, not just the person: a standard joining call, a briefed lookout for the known blind spot, and a hazard log the club actually reviews.
- •Report hazards you find before flight through the same channels — a recurring bird hazard, a confusing taxiway, an unserviceable windsock — so the pattern is visible before it causes an accident.
