Calculation Results

Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI)
22.3 kg/m2
Normalized FFMI (at 1.80m)
22.3 kg/m2
FFMI Category
Exceptional / Advanced
Lean Body Mass
72.3 kg (159.3 lbs)
Fat Mass
12.8 kg (15%)
Total Body Weight
85 kg (187.4 lbs)
Summary: Your Fat-Free Mass Index of 22.3 kg/m2 (normalized) places you in the 'Exceptional / Advanced' category. Lean mass: 72.3 kg, fat mass: 12.8 kg.
Step-by-Step Calculation Solution
1.Lean Body Mass = Total Weight x (1 - Body Fat%) = 85 kg x (1 - 0.15) = 72.3 kg
2.FFMI = Lean Mass / Height^2 = 72.3 / 1.8^2 = 22.3 kg/m2
3.Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 x (1.80 - 1.8) = 22.3
4.Natural FFMI ceiling is generally considered ~25 for males (Kouri et al., 1995)

Formula & How FFMI & Lean Body Mass Calculator Works

Mathematical Formula
FFMI = Lean Mass / Height² | Normalised FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.80 - Height in m)

FFMI measures lean mass relative to height squared, so unlike BMI it is not distorted by muscularity. The normalised version adjusts to a 1.80 m reference height so lifters of different heights can be compared directly. A normalised FFMI around 25 is the widely cited upper bound for drug-free trained men, based on Kouri's analysis of pre-steroid-era bodybuilders. Worked example: a man who weighs 85 kg with 15% body fat has 72.25 kg of lean mass. At 1.80 m tall the FFMI is 72.25 ÷ 1.80² = 22.3, and because 1.80 m is the reference height the normalised value is also 22.3. Typical untrained men sit in the high teens to low 20s, and body fat estimates are themselves uncertain, so treat the result as a rough guide.

How to Calculate FFMI & Lean Body Mass Calculator (Step-by-Step)
  1. Enter Body Weight (kg) (kg): Input your target parameter value.
  2. Enter Height (cm) (cm): Input your target parameter value.
  3. Enter Body Fat (%) (%): Input your target parameter value.
  4. Apply Formula: Calculate using FFMI = Lean Mass / Height² | Normalised FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.80 - Height in m).
  5. Review Results: View exact computed answers, metrics, and worked mathematical proofs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a good FFMI?

For men, 18–20 is average, 20–22 is fit and visibly trained, 22–23 is advanced, and 23–25 is elite. Values above 26 are rarely achieved without pharmaceutical assistance.

Why use FFMI instead of BMI?

BMI counts fat and muscle identically, so trained lifters are routinely misclassified as overweight. FFMI isolates lean mass, giving a meaningful measure of muscularity.
