Formula & How Buoyancy & Archimedes' Fluid Displacement Calculator Works
Archimedes' principle says an object in a fluid is pushed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces: F = ρ × V × g. A 1.2 m³ object fully submerged in seawater (1,025 kg/m³) is pushed up with 1,025 × 1.2 × 9.81 = about 12,066 N. Whether it floats depends on its density compared with the fluid. If it is less dense, it floats with a submerged fraction equal to the density ratio: timber at 600 kg/m³ in seawater sits 600 ÷ 1,025 = 58.5% under the surface. Freshwater (about 1,000 kg/m³) gives less lift than seawater, so a boat sits lower in a river than in the ocean.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why do heavy steel ships float in the ocean?
Although steel is dense (7,850 kg/m³), the ship's hollow hull encloses vast air pockets, making the average density of the entire vessel much lower than seawater (1,025 kg/m³).
Why do boats float higher in saltwater than freshwater?
Seawater contains dissolved salts and is denser (1,025 kg/m³) than freshwater (1,000 kg/m³), providing greater buoyant force per cubic meter of hull displacement.
