Formula & How BMI (Body Mass Index) Calculator Works
Body Mass Index divides your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. For a person who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall, BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9. The World Health Organization adult ranges are under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 or above obese. BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis: it does not separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read high, and it does not account for age, sex or where fat is carried. Use it alongside waist measurement and advice from your doctor.
