Stall Speed Increase

Summary: At 45° bank angle, load factor is 1.41G. Stall speed increases from 50 kts to 59.5 kts.
Step-by-Step Calculation Solution
1.Load Factor G = 1 / cos(45°) = 1.414 G
2.Accelerated Stall Speed = Level Stall × √G = 50 × √1.41 = 59.5 kts
3.Turn Radius = V² / (g × tan(θ)) = 1275 ft (389 m)

Formula & How Bank Angle, G-Force & Stall Speed Calculator Works

Mathematical Formula
Load Factor G = 1 / cos(θ) | Stall Speed = Vs × √G

In a steady, level, coordinated turn the wings must produce more lift than in straight flight, and the load factor is n = 1 ÷ cos(bank angle). At 60° of bank the load factor is 1 ÷ 0.5 = 2.0 g. Stall speed rises with the square root of the load factor, so Vs(turn) = Vs × √n. An aircraft that stalls at 50 knots in level flight stalls at 50 × √2 = about 71 knots in a 60° turn, and at about 59.5 knots in a 45° turn (n = 1.41). This is why steep turns at low speed, such as on base turn to final, are dangerous. Use the figures for study and planning, and always follow the aircraft flight manual for real operations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the G-force at a 60 degree bank angle?

At a 60° bank angle in a level coordinated turn, the load factor is exactly 2.0 G.

How does bank angle affect stall speed?

Stall speed increases proportionally with the square root of the load factor: Vs(bank) = Vs(level) × √G.
