Formula & How Atmosphere Layers & Ionosphere Temperature Profile Calculator Works
The atmosphere is divided into layers by how temperature changes with height. In the troposphere, the lowest layer where weather occurs, temperature falls at about 6.5°C per km, so from a 15°C surface the temperature at the 11 km tropopause is about −56.5°C. In the stratosphere above it, temperature rises with altitude as the ozone layer absorbs ultraviolet radiation. It then falls again through the mesosphere, and rises sharply in the thermosphere. Jet cruise levels sit near the tropopause, where the temperature is lowest and winds can be strongest. The figures follow the International Standard Atmosphere, so real conditions vary with season and location.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why does temperature increase in the Stratosphere?
The Ozone layer (O₃) absorbs high-energy solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, causing thermal heating that creates a temperature inversion.
What is the Ionosphere and why is it important for radio?
The Ionosphere (85-600 km) contains ionized plasma that reflects High Frequency (HF) radio waves back to Earth, enabling global shortwave communications.
