Input Parameters
Walls over 1 m generally require engineering certification and council approval.
A 300 × 300 mm block face is 0.09 m²; a 400 × 200 mm face is 0.08 m².

Formula & How Retaining Wall Block, Gravel & Drainage Calculator Works
A segmental retaining wall relies on a compacted base course and a free-draining aggregate zone behind the face to relieve hydrostatic pressure. Most residential wall failures come from omitted drainage rather than block strength, because saturated backfill can double the lateral load on the wall. Geofabric separates the drainage aggregate from the retained soil so the gravel does not silt up over time. Worked example: a wall 10 m long and 1.2 m high has a face area of 12 m². With a block face of 0.09 m² that is 12 ÷ 0.09 = 134 blocks, and with 10% for cuts and breakages you should order about 147. A drainage zone 0.8 m deep and 0.3 m wide along 10 m needs 10 × 0.8 × 0.3 = 2.4 m³ of free-draining aggregate. Walls over a certain height, or supporting a surcharge, need engineering design and a permit.
- Enter Wall Length (m) (m): Input your target parameter value.
- Enter Exposed Wall Height (m) (m): Input your target parameter value.
- Enter Block Face Area (m²) (m²): Input your target parameter value.

- Enter Drainage Zone Width (m) (m): Input your target parameter value.
- Apply Formula: Calculate using
Blocks = (Length × Height) / Block Face Area | Gravel m³ = Length × Depth × Width. - Review Results: View exact computed answers, metrics, and worked mathematical proofs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How much drainage gravel does a retaining wall need?
A minimum 300 mm wide zone of 20 mm free-draining aggregate behind the full height of the wall, wrapped in geofabric, with an agricultural drain at the base discharging to a legal point.
What height retaining wall needs council approval?
Most Australian councils require engineering certification and approval for walls above 1 metre, or for any wall carrying a surcharge load such as a driveway, structure or slope above.
